Sweet Surprises

Timeline: Current - day 1

"Okay Ashley, what's going on?" Ryan asked as Ashley came out of the bathroom wiping her face again. She had prepared a light dinner for herself and pizza for Lily and Ryan. She preferred the homemade hand tossed pizza that she made from scratch over the replicated. The cheeses seemed to blend better. But as she sat down at the table to eat, a wave of nausea rolled over her again and she found herself vomiting the small lunch she'd managed to eat earlier. Ryan had been there in the early morning when she got sick before breakfast.

Ashley could tell he was concerned and she wanted to discuss everything with him but she needed to be sure she used just the right words.

"Could we get through dinner Ryan?" She asked as gently as she could. "I want to talk to you and Lily but let's eat first so we can sit and really talk." Ashley had a fried tofu and vegetable casserole.

"We can talk while we get through dinner Ashley. You've got me worried."

"Don't be worried." She smiled at him and looked at Lily. "I'm fine. Really. I went and had a check up today."

"Fine doesn't usually require several trips to the bathroom to throw up in one day young lady." He scolded her with a smile and then winked at Lily. "Lily and I aren't going to take a single bite until you tell us what's going on. Isn't that right Lily?"

"Yep." Lily pushed her plate away.

Ashley shook her head. "okay - okay. I thought I might have the Tholian flu and it had me really scared." She looked at Ryan. "Tholian flu is one of the very few viruses that can kill a Vulcan. It attacks their DNA so I had Jen run some blood tests and do a quick bio scan."

"Okay so not the flu or you'd have me in a stasis chamber NOT being exposed." Lily nodded as she pulled her plate back to her and took a bite of pizza.

"Soo-" Ryan wasn't going to be satisfied with that. "What did the scan find." He took a sip from his glass.

"A baby." Ashley said the words and then shoved a mouthful of casserole in her mouth as she gave Ryan a worried look.

"A ba-. A baby?" He looked shocked but not angry.

Ashley looked at him and chewed on her bottom lip. Her brow was curled up in a frown of worry.

Ryan didn't move his eyes from Ashley. "Lily could you take your pizza into your room just this once please?" he asked and then said, "thank you," as she got up and left. Lily was grinning.

Jumping up from the table without looking at him, Ashley took her plate to the sink. "I'm sorry for dropping this on you like that. I wanted to bring it up a little later and a little differently..." She was fighting tears

Ryan walked over to her and put his arms around her waist. He kissed her cheek. "Sh -sh sh." He held her tightly. "This is really unexpected Ash..but.. I dont think I could be happier about it." He opened his hand revealing an open silver box with a black velvet lining. Inside the box a white gold ring with an emerald cut Tanzanite stone in the center surrounded by baguette diamonds.

"Hmm," He snorted a little. "I was going to ask you later but now seems as good a time as any...Let's get hitched so the little one has a complete family before it's born."

**Several hours later**

Ryan lay in bed with Ashley cuddled in his arms. She was admiring the ring on her hand and he was smiling as he watched her.

"You're sure about this Ryan?" She asked without taking her eyes off the ring.

"I had the ring before you told me you were going to have our child..what do you think." He took her hand and kissed it. "You should get some sleep though."

"Hmm yeah. Do you think Lily's okay with this? I mean she didn't say much."

"Computer turn off the lights..." He ordered before he cuddled down in the bed with Ashley. "Well, when I sent her to bed, she was looking at baby clothes and baby furniture." he snickered. "I think she's okay with it." He kissed the top of her head. "now get some sleep."
